We must make sure insurance industry does the right thing for Wicklow businesses – TD
A Wicklow TD has said that Minister Paschal Donohoe must take a hands-on approach to the insurance industry and ensure that they meet their commitments to local businesses.
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health Stephen Donnelly said prior to the Covid-19 crisis he had been working closely with businesses in the county on how to reduce their sky-high premiums which were crippling their ability to grow and in many cases threatening, and sometimes causing, viable businesses to close.
He said it is now vital the Government steps in to make sure vulnerable businesses in Wicklow do not lose out in their dealings with their insurance company.
Deputy Donnelly also called on Minister Donohoe to meet the CEOs of each of the major insurance companies as a matter of priority and impress on them the need to honour legitimate business interruption claims.
“The fact that Minister Donohoe has not yet met with the CEOs is worrying, and does not suggest the level of urgency with which this issue must be treated,” he said
“Recently, I had been working with businesses on trying to get their ridiculously high premiums reduced, and in many cases help them simply find an affordable policy. But the current crisis has made the issue of how insurance companies treat businesses in Wicklow a critical issue.
“Now is not the time for a ‘soft touch’ approach. Govenment must engage with the insurance companies to ensure they implement relief for their customers.”
