Wicklow County Council ranks fifth in transparency index
Wicklow County Council is among just nine councils that publish financial donations given to their councillors.
A National Integrity Index of all 31 local authorities shows Wicklow County Council ranks joint 5th, with a score of 19 out of 30, or 63%.
The Transparency International (TI) Ireland research finds Fingal and South Dublin County Councils are the most transparent, while Kerry and Westmeath Councils are the worst performing.
“It’s encouraging to see local authorities publishing more information than was the case last year but there can’t be any room for complacency,” Dr. Elliott Jordan-Doak from TI Ireland says
“While there have been relatively few recent scandals, the incentives and opportunities for abuse are still there.
“Almost €5bn was spent by councils last year and they play a key role in managing land, delivering public services and protecting the environment.
“Given the scale of their powers and resources, it’s vital that they have adequate fraud and corruption controls in place.”
