Our frontline workers need a solution to childcare – Wicklow TD
An alternative childcare solution to be put in place for Wicklow’s frontline workers after the original scheme was cancelled last week, a Wicklow TD has said.
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Health, Stephen Donnelly, made the call following the news that a plan to provide temporary childcare in their homes has been cancelled.
“An alternative solution needs to be found here and quickly. We cannot expect frontline staff to be worrying about how they are going to meet their childcare needs at a time when they are doing tremendous work across the country,” Deputy Donnelly said.
“I have been contacted by health workers who have say any scheme has to include all healthcare workers.
“There are cases in Wicklow where both parents are healthcare workers. They are not only paying a fortune for their children to be minded but they also have no way for their children to be home schooled.
“Frontline staff should not be out of pocket financially. The failure to get this scheme off the ground is embarrassing for the Minister and one that must be re-examined immediately, and a roadmap needs to be drawn up as to how a proper solution is going to be found.
“What concerns me most is the failure by the Department and the Minister to get this plan up and running, they have cited a low up take in interest as one of the main reasons but we need to get real here, and come up with a plan that is going to work and benefit frontline health care workers.
“The time for talking is over now, we need action and that is what must be worked towards now,” added Deputy Donnelly.
