Alarming rise in number of sex attacks in Wicklow
There has been a worrying rise in the number of sex attacks in Wicklow this year.
New figures published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) today reveal a total of 57 sex crimes were reported in the Wicklow Garda Division during the first six months of 2019.
This is a 23% increase on the in the first half of 2018 – an increase of 22%.
Nationally, just one-in-10 sex crimes reported to gardai up until August 2018 have been solved, according to separate CSO figures.
They show an 11% detection rate for recorded sex crimes. This is the lowest detection rate for all categories of crimes.
Other crimes such as drug offences and murder and manslaughter have much better detection rates. For example, 85% of drug-related crimes are solved, while 72% of murder and manslaughter cases are detected.
A crime is considered ‘detected’ when a suspect has been identified and proceedings have commenced.
The CSO have not released a breakdown of the individual detection rates by each Garda Division.
