Anger as Government refuses funding for West Wicklow swimming pool
The Government has turned down an application by Wicklow County Council for funding towards the development of a new swimming pool in the west of the county.
The local authority had made an application for Stream 1 funding under the Large Scale Sports & Infrastructure Fund to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
The application was to carry out an in-depth feasibility study to confirm the site for the swimming pool and to commission specialist architect drawings.
However, today it emerged the council’s application was not successful.
Local TD John Brady said he is “really disappointed” with the decision.
The Sinn Féin TD added: “Yet again West Wicklow has been ignored by this government. West Wicklow is the only district in Wicklow that has no swimming pool; it has essentially been discriminated against. The campaign group have put forward all the reasons why we a pool in West Wicklow and they have the full support of the full community in the west.
“This is a real set-back, however we must work to identify different funding streams and grants. I will continue to work with the Community Pool for West Wicklow group and Wicklow County Council until this project is delivered.”
