BREAKING: All Wicklow parks closed for the ‘forseeable future’ to combat Covid-19
All Wicklow County Council, OPW and National Parks car parks in the uplands areas of County Wicklow have been closed for the foreseeable future, gardai confirmed today.
The move is aimed at protecting the public from the spread of Covid-19 and to prevent large gatherings where social distancing is almost impossible.
It follows public outrage over the huge crowds who flocked to local beauty spots last weekend despite repeated warnings of the need to maintain social distancing to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
A local Garda spokesperson said today: “As a result of the surge of people to the uplands last weekend there was widespread traffic congestion which put everyone at risk if there was an emergency.
“More than 15 cars were towed away and dozens of fines on the spot were issued. This weekend, even greater enforcement measures will be in place given the new government guidelines.
“We would appeal to everyone to avoid crowded places and obey the guidelines issued by the Government and the HSE.”
