How green is my tally? Wicklow TD calls on council to provide land for allotments
Wicklow Sinn Féin TD John Brady has said that Wicklow County Council needs to provide more land for allotments in Blessington.
He made the call following a meeting with representatives from the Blessington Allotments Campaign group.
Deputy Brady and the group members inspected a number of possible locations in Blessington where allotments could be provided.
“It was great to meet up with members of the Blessington Allotment Campaign Group,” he said.
“The group have been campaigning for the provision of allotments in the Blessington area since 2018. We had a really positive meeting and we looked at a number of possible locations where allotments could be provided.”
“Over 40 members of the Blessington community have registered their interest with the group since they started their campaign in 2018. Allotments help to promote healthy eating by encouraging locally grown organic fresh fruit and vegetables, they also have a positive impact on the carbon footprint.”
“There is clearly a demand for allotments in the area. The current 2016-2022 Wicklow County Development Plan commits the local authority to providing allotments and it lays out the criteria for them.
“The land we looked at is owned by Wicklow County Council and another State Body, and it would be ideal for community allotments. The group has been engaging with the council and I fully support them in their endeavours.
“I will continue to work with both the Council and the Blessington Allotment Campaign on this project. I ultimately think the council should be working with communities across the County with a view of having at least one community allotment in each of the Municipal Districts.”
