Pensioner (81) found homeless sitting outside GPO after being released from hospital
An 81-year-old pensioner has been found homeless and sitting outside Dublin’s GPO after being discharged from hospital with nowhere to go.
The woman has now been accommodated in hotel accommodation after she was found by the charity Reaching Out for Homeless on O’Connell Street at 9.30pm on Thursday night.
The woman was discharged from St James’s Hospital earlier in the day, the Dublin Region Homeless Executive has said, and was assigned an outreach who had a housing plan for her.
Dublin City councillor Christy Burke claimed the woman said she would not go into a hostel and therefore found herself on the streets.
He added that two nights hotel accommodation has been provided by the city council.
“It’s disgraceful that an elderly woman should be wandering the streets like this. It seems she had been discharged from hospital. She insisted she did not want to go into a hostel,” he said.
The woman was described as being from Dublin but “very private” and it is not known if she has any family.
Cllr Burke said he was confident that more secure accommodation would be found for her through one of the homeless charities.
