The Ambassador came calling: Indian VIP pops into Wicklow for a visit

The Indian Ambassador, His Excellency Sandeep Kumar, and his Second Secretary, Mr Terence Dick, paid a courtesy visit to Arklow recently as part of the Indian Embassy’s provincial outreach programme which aims to strengthen the relationship between India and various counties in Ireland.

 The Ambassador met with the Cathaoirligh of Wicklow County Council and Arklow Municipal District Cllr Pat Kennedy and Cllr Sylvester Bourke respectively and Council officials, Mr Frank Curran, Chief Executive; Mr Colm Lavery, Arklow District Manager, and Ms Claire Lawless, District Administrator.

The Cathaoirligh and officials briefed Ambassador Kumar on the exciting developments in the pipeline for the Arklow District and its many benefits as both an investment location and as a place to live and work.

The Ambassador spoke about India’s close ties with Ireland and the Wicklow area and of his desire to grow those ties further into the future. He also stressed the potential business linkages between India and the District particularly in the tech, pharma-chem and renewable energy sectors where India has been to the forefront in market leadership.

The Ambassador visited the office of Arklow Municipal District where he signed the visitor’s book.

Cllr Sylvester Bourke, speaking on behalf of the Members of Arklow Municipal District, stated that “Ambassador Kumar received a very warm welcome to Arklow and we had a very good exchange of views on social, political and economic matters of mutual interest. It is hoped that we can deepen our relationship with our Indian friends as a result of this visit.”

The Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Pat Kennedy, presented the Ambassador with a gift of a cheeseboard  – made by Asgard Woodturning – containing local produce.  He thanked the Ambassador and his colleagues for visiting Arklow and stressed that he looked forward  “strengthening ties between Arklow and, indeed the whole county of Wicklow, with the Indian Embassy” while noting that many Indian nationals reside in the county.

Following the engagement, the Ambassador met with the Arklow and District Chamber of Commerce and its President, Mr Gareth Dempsey.
