Wicklow’s Green TD urges party members to back coalition deal
Local Green TD Steven Matthews has joined his elected Dáil colleagues and made an impassioned plea for party members to vote in favour of the new Programme for Government with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.
Today is the last day that members of the Green Party, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael can vote on whether or not to support the new ‘programme for government,’ with the count to be completed by Friday.
Then we will know if the three parties are in a position to form a new government,
Deputy Matthews, in a post on his Facebook page, urged local members to support the new ‘Our Shared Future’ deal he believes “will be hugely positive and transformative for rural Ireland”.
In the document which calls for a ‘Yes’ vote, Deputy Matthews and his colleagues address all the areas of concern for their members, from housing and farming, carbon emissions, regeneration of rural areas, town regeneration, rural and public transport, and renewable energy,
The Wicklow TD added: “Just some of the many positive things contained in the Programme for Government. I’m not sure these will happen without the Green Party there. The time to act is now’.
“It takes courage to move away from the career safety of the opposition benches. The next government will form as we recover from the devastating impacts of Covid. I didn’t seek a seat in Dáil Éireann to put my feet up and shout across a room. I did it to affect change, to address climate change, to tackle social justice inequalities,” Deputy Matthews concluded.
