World-renowned Wicklow golf resort unveils plans to build impressive new clubhouse
The new owners of Druids Glen Hotel & Golf Resort, regarded as one of the best courses in the world, have wasted no time in trying to improve the venue’s golfing experience.
The Neville Hotel group, has applied to Wicklow County Council to build a brand new clubhouse on the resort, nestled between the towns of Kilcoole and Newtownmountkennedy.
Under the plans received by the local authority the existing staff offices would have to be knocked to make way for the new two-storey clubhouse, while the residential unit at Woodstock House (a protected structure) would be incorporated into the new golfing facility.
If given the go-ahead the new clubhouse would provide new changing rooms, a member’s bar and new kitchen and restaurant facilities, as well as new offices.
The popular county Wicklow venue has famously hosted four Irish Open, from 1996 to 1999 inclusive, and last year was named in the top 75 golf courses in the world by Golfscape magazine.
The hugely successful resort in its latest financials (to end of 2018) reported pre-tax profits of €1.48 million, up 51% on the previous year, while revenues rose 5% to €13.5 million. The county Wicklow resort currently provides employment for more than 220 people.
Until the resort was bought by the Neville Group for a reported €45 million last June, Druid’s Glen was owned by three families – the Lappins, the Hurleys and the Flinns.
The Neville Group also owns Dun Laoghaire’s Royal Marine Hotel, the Rivercourt Hotel in Kilkenny, and the Tower Hotel in Waterford. The hotel group are also currently looking into major investments in their hotels in Waterford and Kilkenny.
